Something New For Your Expletive List: Oh Futch!
Instead of saying the seven dirty words such as “Oh f…!” or “Oh sh..!,” or using some juvenile-sounding alternative such as “Oh fudge,” here’s a new option: “Oh Futch!”
“Oh Futch” sounds sexy, which makes it effective, and also has a positive meaning. An “Oh Futch!” moment is a bad situation that possibly can be turned into something good.
Who the Futch is Futch? In other words, is there a real Futch?
Actually there is. Just as there was a real Murphy for Murphy’s Law, there is a real Futch—Ken Futch. Some 20 years ago, Ken Futch had the misfortune of accidentally shooting himself through the head. Miraculously Futch lived, an event that was carried by the tabloids.
Ken Futch is still very much alive today. He has become a successful humorist, and his shooting story is the centerpiece of his success. His autobiography is entitled “Take Your Best Shot.”
“Oh Futch!” began when Futch gave a speech in Calgary, Canada. Several people who heard that speech began saying “Oh Futch!” and “Who gives a Futch” as a little joke.
But the joke has begun to catch on. More and more people have switched to an expletive that has a positive meaning. That positive idea, incidentally, is the subtitle of Ken Futch’s book: ” Turning Situations Into Opportunities.”
Here’s an opportunity for you to be the first in your circle of acquaintances to use a new expletive, and at the same time be able to say something positive about what has happened. How often does one get a chance to do that with an expletive?
