“The future does not belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots. The future belongs to strong, independent nations.”
—Donald Trump st the UN, September 24, 2019
Does Trump not know that nationalism gave us two ghastly world wars that left Leningrad and Dresden and Plymouth and Hiroshima in ruins and tens of millions dead?
Does Trump not know that the organization where he spoke…the United Nations…was begun after that ghastly war by Roosevelt and Truman in the desperate hope that the world could be spared another such calamity?
Does Trump not know that Europe has enjoyed its longest peace in centuries because of partnerships that are global and organizations that link national interests to the larger good: the UN and the World Court and the EU and NATO?
Does Trump not know that Hitler and Mussolini would have been completely comfortable saying what he said without editing a single word?
Does Trump not know that President Truman carried a poem by Tennyson in his wallet that foretold a Parliament of man and a Federation of the World?
“For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonders that would be;
Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,
Pilots of the purple twilight, dropping down with costly bales;
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain’d a ghastly dew
From the nation’s airy navies grappling in the central blue;
Far along the world-wide whisper of the south-wind rushing warm,
With the standards of the peoples plunging thro’ the thunder-storm;
Till the war-drum throbb’d no longer, and the battle-flags were furl’d
In the Parliament of man, the Federation of the world.
There the common sense of most shall hold a fretful realm in awe,
And the kindly earth shall slumber, lapt in universal law.”
-Locksley Hall, 1835, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
