How To Say No On A Dating Site

What You Say If Someone Contacts You On A Dating Site, And You Aren’t Interested
By Gene Griessman, Ph.D

Whatyousay.com recommends that you respond to the initial contact at Match.com or any other reputable dating site if the message was courteous. We think it’s rather impolite to simply ignore someone who’s taken the time to write you a nice inquiry.

Begin with a sincere compliment of some kind. Then add a crisp—“This just isn’t a good fit.”

No need to explain why it is not a good fit. In fact, we recommend just the opposite.  Explaining your decision just invites further unwanted emails.

We do Not recommend answering after your first reply.

Below is a sample reply for a dating site:

“Thank you for contacting me. You certainly have many accomplishments, but I’m afraid this just isn’t a good fit.” Or, “You certainly are attractive, but I’m afraid this just isn’t a good fit.  Best wishes as you continue your search.”
