What To Say To Turn Any Good Restaurant Into Your Own Private Club
Here’s a technique to impress your date, guests, or business contacts, and get excellent customer service as a bonus. This tip comes from Harvey Mackay, author of the best-seller “Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive.”
When you call in to make your reservation, ask to speak to the manager or head waiter—someone who’s reliable and has authority—and tell that person to make sure that you’re not presented with a bill after your meal. Instead, give him/her your credit card information, and request that they charge the bill to your credit card.
When you use this technique, be sure to add a very generous tip— 20 per cent or more in advance as appreciation for the extra effort. To insure that all goes smoothly, you might also request your favorite server in advance.
It just looks impressive later on when you finish your meal to just get up and leave with your guests—without going through the paying-for-the meal ritual. Recently, when I finished a meal with a business acquaintance and began to leave without getting a check, my guest turned to me and observed, “They must really know you here.” I smiled and replied, “Yes, they do.”
