What You Say When You Want To Write “Thank You”
by Gene Griessman, Ph.D.
We have selected a beautifully composed thank-you note from Kelly Brown’s “101 Ways To Say Thank You” to serve as a guide for writing words that will be appreciated and remembered. For your thank-you message, you will want to adapt it to your own situation. That goes without saying. But you can incorporate important elements of Kelly Brown’s note into your message of appreciation.
One. Be specific. Brown mentions the food (the BBQ, the chocolate cake), the setting (the Hamptons, the seaside)
Two. Use words that sing. Brown is not afraid to use superlatives (magical, fabulous, incredible). Expand your thank-you vocabulary. Far better to be too generous than to be too stingy with your words.
Three. Write from your heart. Tell how it all made you feel. Kelly Brown did, and that is why this is such good writing.
“Dear Mr. and Mrs. Angel
My weekend at your home in the Hamptons was simply magical.
I can still smell the delicious seaside BBQ we had on Saturday night and taste that fabulous chocolate cake. How did the two of you become such incredible gourmet chefs?
Please know I appreciated that you made me feel so welcome in every way. I look forward to seeing you both again soon.
