Conflict Resolution Strategy:Talk About
Something Pleasant
In the spring of 2011, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was asked during an interview what advice he would give President Obama. You may feel that Mayor Bloomberg could use some advice from President Obama, but the advice the Mayor offered makes a lot of sense no matter who you are or what party you belong to.
Here’s what Mayor Bloomberg said: “He has to pick up the phone and call and say, ‘I know we disagree on this, but I just want to say, I heard it was your wife’s birthday, or your kid just got into college…”
You don’t have to be a professional politician to make use of its wisdom. It’s good business advice, too. It is wise and effective because very few individuals are completely immune to genuine expressions of thoughtfulness, even those who strongly disagree with you.
