Why Daily Affirmations Can Make A Difference: The Ideas of Florence Scovel Shinn
Steve Nicklin, the CEO of highly regarded Nicklin Property Management in Los Vegas, credits much of his business success to his reading “The Power Of The Spoken Word” by Florence Scovel Shinn.
Shinn believed that there is a spiritual prototype of your body and affairs. She called this prototype, the Divine Design. This Divine Design is a perfect idea in a person’s “superconscious mind.”
Most people, Shinn taught, have contrary ideas—imperfect pictures of failure, resentment, disease, and hate that are stamped on their subconscious. In order to escape the power of these negative images, we need to give the subconscious a new order.
Here is this new order, or affirmation, that we should say: “Let me now express the Divine Idea in my mind, body, and affairs.”
“If you will impress the subconscious by repeating this statement,” Shinn wrote, “you will be amazed at the changes that will soon take place. You will be bombarded by new ideas and new ideals. A chemical change will take place in your body. Your environment will change for the better, for you are expanding into the Divine Plan, where all conditions are permanently perfect.”
Many of the affirmations that Shinn taught were specific to the needs of individuals. One example she cited was a young woman who had broken up with her boyfriend, an experience that left her unhappy, resentful, and discouraged.
Shinn gave her this affirmation: “I am now immune to all hurt and resentment. My poise is built upon a rock, the Christ within.” Shinn recommended that the woman begin to take very specific actions that showed she truly believed her story would have a happy ending.
Shinn’s book reports that the story’s ending was happy indeed.
